We reviewed the MateBook E at its £999 introductory price and gave it a five-star rating and our recommended award, praising its display, cameras and the keyboard that comes with the model we’re highlighting here. First, let’s talk about that gorgeous display. It’s a gorgeous 12.6-inch OLED panel with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 and can reach a maximum brightness of 600 cd/m2 when the ambient light detector detects direct sunlight and turns on the high brightness mode. Coverage of the sRGB and DCI-P3 color gamuts is excellent, as is the accuracy of color reproduction in these gamuts.
Core i5 with Nimble Performance
The Core i5 chipset powering the MateBook E causes some thermal issues, but the device’s fans are efficient and virtually silent, while the performance is nimble enough to handle general productivity tasks with relative ease. It probably won’t come as a surprise that you won’t be playing any serious games on the MateBook E, but a bit of casual mobile gaming isn’t out of the question if it’s your bag.
When it comes to photography and video recording, however, the MateBook E is far more capable. The 8MP webcam can record video up to a maximum resolution of 1080p at 60fps, while the rear 12.6MP camera can record in 4K at 30fps and has a usable flash. A single USB-C port, average battery life, and lack of a memory card slot kept the MateBook E from earning our Best Buy award, but those relatively minor flaws are easily forgotten at this new Black Friday price.
Core i3
There’s also an Intel Core i3 model on offer, which will set you back £450 from the original price of £600. Huawei ships it with its smart magnetic keyboard and the same backpack that comes with the i5, both of which are very welcome additions.
